Saz lessons.

The saz, also called the bağlama, is one of the most important and beautiful-sounding instruments in Turkish and Anatolian music. Its warm, slightly metallic sound can drive a rhythm and tell a deeply emotional story at the same time. In saz lessons at Music Campus Bielefeld, you'll learn step by step how to play this special instrument and develop its characteristic sound. The bağlama is perfect for accompanying traditional songs, but also for playing modern songs in an oriental style. In saz lessons in Bielefeld, you'll get to know typical picking techniques, rhythms and melodies, and you'll be playing your first pieces after a short time.
At the same time, the saz opens up a musical world full of emotion, improvisation and cultural depth. The lessons are for beginners and advanced players who want to discover the bağlama and grow as musicians. Playing the bağlama builds a strong sense of rhythm, a fine ear and the ability to express music in a lively, authentic way.
A neck full of
in-between notes.
The saz has more frets than a guitar: between the semitones there are extra frets for finer notes, the comma notes (often simply called quarter tones, dashed here). Choose a makam, tap or drag across the neck. The golden dots show which frets belong to it. The drone lets the open strings ring along in bağlama tuning (G, D, A).
How your saz lessons work.
The first lessons
Posture, picking with the plectrum and finding your way around the long neck with its extra frets. Soon you'll be playing your first melodies from Anatolian folk music.
Over time
Makams such as Hüseyni or Hicaz, typical ornaments and odd meters like those found in many traditional dances. Later, free improvisation comes in too.
For kids and adults
Depending on hand size, children start from around age 7 to 9, often on a short-neck bağlama. Adults find the saz a personal way into Turkish and Anatolian music.
Practising at home
Listening and playing along regularly trains your ear for the in-between tones. Short daily practice sessions strengthen your picking and fingering.
